1 Tim 5 Taking care of our own

We are enjoined to take care of our own in this passage. A number of questions came to mind. Please respond to these and/or add your own.
  • 1. Who are our "own"? Does it mean only blood relatives, does it include the local Body of Christ, the larger Body..?
  • 2. Are we really to live like Acts 2?
  • 3. Would Christ ask us to change any part of our personal agenda's to make room to serve others. If so, how do we test and evaluate what we heard Him say, what are to do?

1. Since this passage is mainly focused on widows, I believe he is referring to blood relatives of widows. He is discussing how the church should help widows, but it is her blood relatives that have the first responsibility to provide for her. By doing this, there will be more resources available to serve the widows that have no one to provide for them.

The whole chapter is about providing for the members of the church, so I think the principle in this verse can be applied to the church body.

2. Yes, I think this chapter is a detailed example of how a Acts 2 style church would serve the issues of its members.

3. Definitely, numerous times Christ promotes self sacrifice for the service of others. He even ultimately modeled self sacrifice on the cross. I think we test what we think He is telling us through prayer and seeking the counsel of the elders of your church and other members.
